what memory manager are you using?
are you setting up EMS and XMS memory types?
my general recommendation on those older machines is to use QEMM for
the memory manager and run its tuning process to allow it to optimize memory usage so that you have the most base memory available...

Back in 1994, 24 megabytes was a LOT of RAM. If I remember right, you could use HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE to optimize your DOS memory. HIMEM loads part of DOS in the memory between 640K and 1 meg, and EMM386.EXE lets programs access the other 23 megs of RAM.
