    Greetings All!

So while setting up a new node on my fidohub I ran into an interesting issue, not sure if its new or not. I got this new sysop setup and he sent the hub an areafix message which my system processed, however it caused me to receive around 500 netmails from my uplink claiming bad credentials, so I questioned new sysop to make sure he was sending areafix to me and not nick andre. he was certain addressed correctly and so on. I then decided to test areafix and went on one my BBS's and just sent areafix a %LIST which is processed correctly however over the next 2 hours I received more than 23k (yes twenty three thousand) netmails from my uplink stating bad credentials. So after all that explanation I have but one question?

Why would my hub pass anything along areafix wise that it could handle itself to the uplinK?? It should not do that unless one of my nodes requests something that I do not carry etc... Ok two questions; where can I look or what can I look for in my config that would cause such an action?

    Hello, Rick!

Tuesday January 17 2023 12:29, from Rick Smith -> All:

I got this new sysop setup and he sent the hub an areafix message
which my system processed, however it caused me to receive around 500 netmails from my uplink claiming bad credentials, so I questioned new sysop to make sure he was sending areafix to me and not nick andre.

If I were that new sysop and my fido uplink asked me to whom I had sent the areafix request, then I would be sort of curious to know whether my uplink have any logs in place or they will trust my answer haha.

he was certain addressed correctly and so on.

Just do not trust anybody, including yourself and check out the logs whether your system has sent out anything to Nick or not.

I then decided to test areafix and went on one my BBS's
and just sent areafix a %LIST which is processed correctly however
over the next 2 hours I received more than 23k (yes twenty three
thousand) netmails from my uplink stating bad credentials.

Ah, lucky you had a chance to reproduce the issue yourself. Hope by the time you started your journey you had had your log levels cranked all the way to max, right?

So after all that explanation I have but one question?

Me too, have just one simple question - after all these exercises, have you collected any log lines for us to look at?

Why would my hub pass anything along areafix wise that it could handle itself to the uplinK??

Ah, you must have had some areafix forwarding rules in place, but we are not familiar with your setup.

It should not do that unless one of my nodes requests something that I
    do not carry etc...

It usually does what you ask it to do, but your mileage may vary ;-)

Ok two questions; where can I look or what can I look for in my config that would cause such an action?

    # This is preset for full logging. Uncomment this line only
    # if you have trouble with husky programs and need as many
    # information as they can give you
    LogLevels 0-9A-Za-z
